In The Abbey and On the Road(page6)
As the check arrives and the students prepare
to return to the Abbey, several offer advice for the
next generation of students. Recalling the long trip
lugging his suitcase from the bus up three flights of
stairs to his room, Vietenheimer says, “Definitely
pack light. If you think you’ve packed light,
unpack half of it, and then you’ll pack light.”
Graham is more philosophical. “I’m
not going to leave here and be sitting back home thinking,
I’m so mad I didn’t do this, I’m so
mad I didn’t do that. I think you have to really
make a conscious effort to do everything that you want
to do.”
“Just enjoy the ride,”
Fales says. “It’s not going to last too
long. It’ll be over before you know it. Enjoy
the time you have and the new friends you’re making.”
Smiling in agreement, Vietenheimer
adds, “You’ll look back 30 years from now
and you’ll just be saying in your mind, ‘The
Abbey.’ So many stories, so many tales, so many
crazy moments. Fales adds: “Nobody here is the
type of kid to live with regrets. When we are paying
our student loans off years from now, are we going to
remember that many classes from Michigan or Southern
Miss or wherever? Just ask around this place a little
bit about memories. We will never forget here. None
of The Abbey will go away.”
