The
Abbey
The spectacular campus of the Eur-Am Center is the historic
monument known for almost 1,000 years as the Abbey of
Pontlevoy. Founded in the 11th century by
a crusader fulfilling a promise made to the heavens
(at what had seemed the moment of his death), The Abbey
gained an international stature as a Benedictine refuge
over the course of the 12th and 13th
centuries. In a time of peace and prosperity, the Benedictine
monks built a cathedral that stands today as it has
since before Columbus came to the Americas.
When
religious wars drove them out, the monks were replaced
first by military cadets, then by the sons of Europe's
wealthiest citizens. Thousands of students, over scores
of generations, have marked this place in their own
ways. Through The Abbey Program, today's students have
their chance to leave their mark in history. |
