Created by The College of International and Continuing Education at The University of Southern Mississippi, partner universities and performing musicians, Abbey Summer Music offers academic training in theory and performance at the master class level. For dates, prices, audition information and other assistance, please contact rbeck@euramcenter.com.

1) The Psychology of Music

Created for music majors, students of music therapy and music lovers generally, this course will survey the acoustical and psychological processes of music as they relate to society, culture, learning, emotion, behavior and preference. In its exploration of human music potential and musicality, the course will examine the basic acoustic properties of music, offer an introduction to the ear and auditory brain, explore perceptual and physiological responses to music and assess the relationship between music and behavior. The course will use The Abbey's musical performance programs and the summer music festival in the village of Pontlevoy as case studies. Kristen Cole, Assistant Professor Music and Director of Music Therapy at The Mississippi University for Women, will teach this course.

2) Soundscapes of Music Literature

This course will survey music through periods, composers and genres. Designed to function as a Music Literature course for music majors, the course will serve Fine Arts majors and other interested students as a general appreciation offering. In cooperation with the Pontelvoy Summer Music Festival, the course's students and faculty will offer Tuesday night recitals. Dr. Ruth Morrow, Bolin Chair of Piano at Midwestern State University, will teach this course

3) The Jean-Baptiste Arban International Trumpet Institute

The institute will be a two-week yearly event honoring different legends of the trumpet. Directed by Dr. David Champouillon of East Tennessee State University, the Institute will be the premier trumpet event of the summer in Europe. Students and faculty will offer weekly open rehearsals and evening recitals.

4) Masters of Pontlevoy: The Abbey String Institute

Directed by Alexandre Brussilovsky, Masters of Pontlevoy will welcome the world's best string faculty and students to an intense two weeks of master class training and performances.
