Overview
The Eur-Am Center is working with educational
partners around the world to develop a unique concept
in study-abroad learning for university students: "The
Abbey: A New School of Thought." The Abbey is intended
to be the landscape for an educational journey and an
innovative way of approaching cultural immersion. Focusing
on the needs of globally ambitious undergraduates, the
Abbey is committed to delivering excellence in international
education across the entire academic spectrum. The Abbey
debuted in September 2002 with an initial class of 40
students, taught by United States and European Union
faculty teams. The Abbey's innovative interdisciplinary
approach to global learning challenges the legacy notion
that students often jeopardize college credits and/or
becoming fluent in a foreign language to experience
cultural immersion.
- Exposure to another culture
is valuable at any stage of a college career, but
especially so at the freshman and sophomore level,
as insights gained can enrich the balance of the college
experience.
- Courses are taught in English
at the Abbey, except for optional French to all students
at all levels.
- Students take a full academic
load of between 12 and 18 credit hours per semester
in an American university system, and the credits
are fully transferable.
- Field research and study trips
are integral to the academic experience.
